The Bowen Basin
Mackay is the gateway to the Bowen Basin, a booming region that contains virtually all of the state’s hard coking coal and is the most important source of export coal in Queensland.

It covers an area of coal reserves and mining related communities that extend over approximately 60,000 square kilometers of Central Queensland from the town of Collinsville in the north to Theodore in the south.

The Callide, Clarence Moreton, Tarong and Surat Basins are important sources of thermal coal for domestic power generation and it continues to expand with many new mining operations planned in the near future.

This is the largest coal reserve in Australia and the 34 operational coal mines extract over 100 million tons annually. This represents some 83 per cent of the State of Queensland’s coal production - its most important export commodity.

Oil & Gas
Petroleum exploration and development during 2006/07 reached record levels with a total of 563 wells drilled, the largest number of petroleum wells completed in Queensland during a 12 month period. This was made up of 392 coal seam gas wells and 171 conventional petroleum wells.

The continued growth in exploration expenditure for the petroleum industry in Queensland (including coal seam gas), is reflected in the increase in exploration expenditure for 2008. The strong expansion of the gas and petroleum industry continues today, as it has for over 40 years.
